Simple Pleasures

When our sons were very small, my clever husband taught them both to play guitars and unleashed a powerful gift of music that the Lord had placed in their souls.
He showed them everything he knew and stood back, as they took flight into a musical world where they excelled. Even now as adults, they are always surprising us with their talent and good ear for music. It seems there's nothing they can't play-guitar, keyboard, drums, mouth-organ, dulcimer-the list goes on and on!

As they grew up they played in churches, in concerts, with friends in a band, at family gatherings, and at their grandmother's funeral. They still have a strong passion for music and I believe they always will, it's an integral part of them now.
When my oldest son left home 6 years ago and moved to another state, he composed beautiful music and put it onto cd's to send to us. He created a special piece for me as a Mother's Day gift; which was a very precious thing for me to receive from him so far away!

And now, our youngest son is no longer at home either. He moved out a few months ago too.
He still lives in town and when he comes home he just naturally settles into a chair somewhere, and picks up a guitar and starts strumming away spontaneously, as if nothing's changed :-)
I love to hear him playing old country gospel songs, while I'm cooking or making a pot of tea for us. I feel like "all is well with the world"!
And he still comes to us with the familiar "Mum and Dad listen to this..."as he performs his latest song and grins at us, just like when he was a little boy waiting for applause. So sweet-I love it!

The joyful gift of music that God has given to my men will always be one of my simple pleasures in life!
Today, I am joining in for the first time with Dayle at A Collection Of This And That:Simple Pleasures. If you'd like to do it too, just check out her lovely blog at:http://alittleofthisandthat2.blogspot.com/p/simple-pleasures.html

  1. Trish, what a delightful simple pleasures post. Your writing is beautiful and I can only imagine the joy you feel hearing your "men" play so many wonderful instruments. I, too, come from a musical family and can't imagine a world without it. It has steadied me in stormy times, and brought me so much joy throughout my life. What a wonderful simple pleasure, music.

Thank you so much for linking up today. I hope to see you often.

  2. Thank you so much for dropping by and saying hi, it was lovely to meet you. Your comment about the silence is what makes it real - you really know that your children (who were once noisy) have left and the house becomes silent.

  3. I just tried to post a comment and I *think* it got lost in space. I'm sort of afraid to repeat in case it does show up later. LOL

I love your simple pleasure, Trish. Not much else can fill a house like music. I'm late making my rounds at the simple pleasures party, but I feel like a special treat was saved till last.

Hope they all continue making music for years to come!

  6. Firstly, I love your photos. The first one is especially beautiful.

My husband plays guitar (self-taught), but neither of my children really got into playing an instrument. Just recently my husband encouraged my son to look into buy a drum kit, as my son used to play those when he was only a young boy. I think I am grateful he hasn't followed through, as I am sure the neighbours are too!! LOL

    Lovely post, Trish...

  9. Hi Trish:

I have always had a love for music. As a child, I took piano lessons, but no longer play (shame on me). What a blessing you have for your sons to play music.

Thanks for visiting my blog and I'm glad to see you on Simple Pleasures.

    Blessings,
    Joan
