Do you remember this??...

The 23rd Channel

The T.V. set is my shepherd;
My spiritual growth shall want.
It maketh me to sit down and do nothing for His Name's sake,
because it requireth all my spare time.
It keepeth me from doing my duty as a Christian,
because it presenteth so many shows that I must see.

It restoreth my knowledge of the things of the world,
And keepth me from the study of God's Word.
It leadeth me into the paths of failing
To attend the evening worship services,
...and doing nothing in the Kingdom of God.

Yea, though I live to be a hundred,
I shall keep on viewing my T.V. as long as it will work,
For it is my closest companion.
It's sound and it's pictures they comfort me.

It presenteth entertainment before me,
And keepeth me from doing important things with my family.
It fills my head with ideas which differ from those
Set forth in the Word of God.

Surely, no good things will come of my life,
Because my T.V. offereth me
No good time to do the will of God;
Thus, I will dwell
In the place of the devil and his angels, forever.

Now read it again and replace T.V. with  "laptop".
Ouch!!!
(I think I need to ponder these words for a while!)

letter to self...

You know Trish,
as with the television, computers of today can be an unholy intrusion into our families and our home-life.
We need to exercise much discernment and discipline with these gadgets!
Yes, they are able to bring us blessing too - as long as we keep a firm control on them and not slip into apathy while our moral standards are being chipped away at!
There's a grave responsibility that comes with owning such technology.
If we don't purposefully exercise that responsibility, we shall be called to account!
It will do us no good to remonstrate by saying we were only having some harmless fun or just being creative.
As christians, we should know that the Lord does not accept such 'worldly' reasoning.

So we must keep in mind, the dangers of wasting too many hours surfing websites just to alleviate boredom.
Oh, sure it's great to have pleasant and uplifting places to pop in on and visit for a little while..
and we can all find blessing in the way God uses the words of others to get His message across to us at times.
No denying that!!
It's also healthy to share friendship and creative ideas and homemaking skills - most of us really enjoy and benefit from this kind of exchange!
That's fine!
But when we become obssesed and so absorbed in tracing down every word or image on a subject, and ignore our present duties and responsibilities - it has become distinctly unhealthy and a real problem.

You know personally, that there are times when you find you've been sitting at the computer for far longer than you thought or had intended to.
It's not always easy to turn off a really nice blog and go do the vacuuming instead, lol!
Some days it's quite a battle.
Perhaps not as much for busy mothers of young children, as for someone like you who is an empty-nester with more time on your hands.
You have to maintain a balance with your home and family duties, and make sure you don't let a machine run your days for you!
Spending time with the Lord, caring for your house and loved ones, giving yourself to neighbours and friends, doing the "duty of the present moment", must come first!
And after that..there will still be plenty of time for you to go visit folks with your laptop.

(Whew- I needed to hear that! Now to put it into practise!)

  1. This was certainly a sobering little poem and lesson, but one which we all need to hear and try our best to put into practice. It's something that I'm slowly learning to do over time, but it's not easy, yet I know it's necessary.

    Great message!

  2. Hi Trish,
I can really relate to what you have written today.
I have come to realise that I have been trying too hard to be a "good blogger friend" and "socialise" with too many people and go to too many blog link-ups
I was checking my laptop morning and night to make sure I visited everybody who joined the blog parties.
    A LITTLE OBSSESSIVE.....
Time to put blogging into MY day......Not my day around blogging.
Thanks Trish, I needed to hear this.
    God Bless

  3. Oh dear friend...this is the hardest part of my journey - to let go of this apparatus and create boundaries.

Boundaries are already in place, but now to adhere to them!!!

Excellent poem and I thank you Trish for sharing it with me this morning.

  4. I just stopped by and found your post to have such a refreshing take on how we waste our time.Using the opposite in scripture verse was so creative. Gave me food for thought this morning as I drink my cup of coffee. Thanks, and I think I will link up to you as well. Blessings!

  5. Oh my goodness...this is what I've been dealing with. We got rid of the TV 27 years ago, and still don't have one. With 4 children at that time (and 3 more coming later) it was the best thing we ever did for our family. I was so busy then, and I don't see where young moms raising children, especially homeschooling too, find the time to blog, but there are many that do. We did watch selected movies on a monitor and VHS/DVD, but that came a few years after gettng rid of the TV. Now, I find myself on the computer way too much. Just sitting here filling time. We still have our youngest at home who needs a computer for college, and hubby works from home on the computer. Honestly, when he retires and our son is married and gone, I think I'll get rid of the computer too!
This post is so "right on"! There is a lot of good in the internet, but a lot of bad too, and I feel reaching a happy medium is very difficult. I know I had a life before the internet and texting!
Thanks for posting this...I'll have to read and re-read it too.
I know the Lord is speaking to me about all this. Sorry I've rattled on so...
    God bless you,
    Anne♥

  7. TRISH :O)

    OUTSTANDING POST!!

This hits the nail on the head. In the past year I have stopped watching 90% of television, and movies. Also, I stopped reading magazines such as People, home and garden etc. The reason I stopped doing this was because the Lord had placed a conviction on my heart. Television and the latest fashion, or home design magazines were taking priority over my desire to spend time with the Lord.

I know It's not like this for everyone. I'm just one of those people who can easily become too fixated on things, and I need to be aware of anythings that inhibits my growth in the Lord, and break free from it.

My goal with blogging is to continue to blog for Christ, because that keeps my focus on Him. I only visit about four blogs now and one of those is yours, as your already know :o).

At church on Sunday the pastor spoke specifically on the Bible verse you use for your LACE post. Philippians 4:8 Whatever is...--- and the pastor said to place this verse on our television, computer, car stereo, etc. His point being that we must guard our minds, which in turn guards our heart. He stated that having this Bible verse posted on our televisions and computers would certainly change what we look and listen to. It was a great sermon.

    Trish, Great post, loved it
    God bless you friend,
    Michele
