What makes a home really feel like "home" to you?
Is it having all the furniture matching and sticking to a certain look to the exclusion of all else?
Some people are uncomfortable unless a room all matches.
Do you prefer formal Victorian period details to more relaxed modern contemporary styles?
As much as I love delicate china settings and lace in my decorating scheme,
I find I also need to balance that out with some rustic time-worn things around me to make me feel "at home".
I am really quite eclectic in my decor and certainly not a purist when it comes to "style"!
I simply forget about any rules and put out whatever makes me happy.
And if that means some old paint-chipped furniture must sit alongside a traditional polished antique piece - so be it!
I've never been one to slavishly try to re-produce a particular period look in our home.
Mis-matched things are what I enjoy working with the most and a room that takes itself too seriously leaves me cold!
Whereas, a little simple earthy imperfection makes me feel warm all over.
I like the "honesty" of things that have been well-used and don't mind showing it!
To me, a home is a place where flaws and imperfections are accepted as part of life.
And not just that, but appreciated and cared for as well.
Beauty can be found just as much in the humble things around us as in the seemingly perfect.
It only takes the will to "see" it.
The texture of a fat pumpkin's irregular wobbly grooves.. layers of old paint showing through on a table..the big nose and crooked smile of a Raggedy Ann make me feel good.
They're all a bit quirky and simple...just like me really :-)

Hi Trish,
ReplyDeleteI'm with you . . . I'm so at home with my mismatched treasures . . . a bit of the rustic mixed in with the old Victorian heirlooms and lace. I love your Raggedy Ann doll, so cute!
Blessings friend,
Kim
I AGREE, I LOVE VICTORIAN BUT I LOVE FIFTIES AND MUCH MORE SOME RUSTIC AS WELL...I LAUGH SOMETIMES AND SAY I KNOW THERE ARE RULES BUT I DON'T CARE IF IT FEELS GOOD AND LOOKS GOOD TO ME THAT'S ALL THAT COUNTS..SO I MIX WHAT EVER I WANT...HAPPY MONDAY...WITH LOVE JANICE
ReplyDeleteThe older the piece, the more beautiful it is :)
ReplyDeletem.
:-) That's me too, definitely eclectic!
ReplyDeleteHi Trish,
ReplyDeleteYou are so right about the matchy-matchy thing. I'm more relaxed in my decorating than I ever was before and I tend to lean towards more comfortable rooms. I still like things to 'go together' but they don't have to be a perfect match any more.
The only thing I like to keep around which is a perfect match is my hubby. LOL!
Wonderful post, my friend!
Blessings and hugs,
Sandi
I had to think what kind of design my house or decorating is. Maybe it is electic for it is not modern. I like it to be homey and comfortable. Pam
ReplyDeleteHi Trish,
ReplyDeleteLove,Love,Love the pumpkin.
I don't have a 'style' of decorating. If I had to put a name to my decor theme I think it would be 'how to fit the most people into the smallest space'
Seriously....my style is ...Welcoming.
God Bless

In my life things do not have to be perfect to make me happy!!!!

I think if it makes you smile and makes your home you - that's what works! Thanks for hosting. I hope you have a blessed week,

Hi Trish, yes I can relate to everything you've said, sounds just like me. Love mixed up homely things. I put out whatever I like. Love raggady Ann too xx
ReplyDeleteI think your home decor looks great. I don't like to stick to too many rules when I decorate, though I do like things to match from time to time.
ReplyDeleteFlawed decor? Nonsense - perfection! Cozy, warm, traces of past generations and life lived in every chip of paint or primitive corner. I have a mis-match of museum decor all over my home and love that every piece tells a story - and ministers to all who enter here.
ReplyDeleteJoy!

Hi Trish,
ReplyDeleteI wanted to stop by and say hello.
Great photos, and I like your style. I really like the pumpkin, and it's pretty green color.
God bless you friend,
michele
Dear Trish,
ReplyDeleteI love the look and feel of things that have lived another life; I can almost feel the presence of the original owners, and it brings a feeling of peace to my home.
I especially love your crocks!
Love,
Marqueta
No rules in my house, only things I like. Don't you find the rooms that all match tend not to feel homely.
