The old way..

This is what the LORD says:
"Stop at the crossroads and look around.
Ask for the old, godly way, and walk in it.
Travel its path, and you will find rest for your souls. Jer. 6:16

When we moved from our last home into our present one we had many boxes of collected things which we put into storage.
We decided to go "modern" in how we decorated our new space and chose a very pared-back decor, compared to our usual vintage style.
In fact, we tried the "minimalist" look for a while with hardly anything in the way of decoration on display.
It was an interesting exercise to do.
We discovered how having (or not having) our usual items us around  made us feel.
In the beginning it wasn't too bad - it was even pleasant to be in a very uncluttered space; but as time went on we found the emptiness of our main rooms was starting to depress us.

Friends and family noticed our "new look" and it became obvious that they didn't particularly like it!
We thought it was just because it was so different for us and that they would all get used to it in time ..and hopefully we would too.
One day a familiar friend came to visit us, and after fretfully looking around our rooms asked, "Are you moving out"?!
That showed us that the bare look was not only making us uncomfortable, but our guests were missing the stable, warm feeling they were used to finding in our old house.
Our "minimalist" look only confused others and made them wonder if we were still in the "moving" process.

So..out came some boxes from storage, and into the dressers went our rustic and familiar things, and onto the chairs went the comfy cushions and quilts once again!
When our young friend returned the next time, he walked in and declared, "Ah that looks much better! It's more homely now!"
I was actually surprised at how our decor had affected him, as I didn't think such a young man would take notice!
I expected something from our lady friends - but this was a burly 30ish fellow who surprised us by his spontaneous reactions!
It wasn't that he was looking for designer furniture or collectibles, it was the atmosphere of the room that had caused him to speak out.

I decided then that I would forget about trying to de-clutter on a massive scale and just concentrate on creating a warm and cosy home again.
For us..that means vintage knick-knacks, lace, china, musical instruments, rustic kitchen things, lots of wood and quilts.
It's how we've always decorated and visitors to our homes often remarked on the nice "feeling" they found in our place.
I really think that had more to do with it being a happy christian home than anything else; but I also believe that how we decorate our homes does impact the sense of warmth and comfort that our guests find within our walls.
We "looked around" our home and went back to "the old way".
And I'm glad we did!
Now family and friends feel comfortable here again, and even more welcomed and loved!

  1. Like you, I tried the 'minimal' look but I felt deprived and empty when I looked around me.

After cleaning out the garage this past Spring, I was able to bring out the beautiful things that I had collected but had forgotten I had :)

Your home looks cozy...and it is a reflection of you and your husband.

Peace be with you my friend,

    Maria

  2. I think we must all have tried the same thing Trish. I know we came back to the cosy, warm, comfy look. Everyone that comes in says how they love our cosy home. Even the grandchildren remark now and then about how homely and safe it feels. It was a good exercise I think. xxoo

  4. All homes are unique and should display the heart and soul of the people who live in them. This means that everyone's home tastes, style, and decor will be different. This means that what works for one home may not work for another and this is okay.

I'm glad that you and your husband have discovered what works best for you and your visitors. Just looking at your lovely photos gives me the impression as well that your home looks very homey as well as inviting. :)

  5. This is a very interesting post.I agree that part of the enjoyment of home is living with the things you love all around you. I find it is things my mom owned or older vintage items. Nothing fancy.

  6. I did a major de-clutter when we were in the process of selling our home.
After a couple of weeks I couldn't take it anymore and brought some of my treasures back. As soon as I was finished my four year old daughter stated.."Our house is back"

A lesson will learned from a four yr old...

  8. I think a home should tell the story of your life bits you have collected along the way and if they are out on display you can relive the memories but I do like empty drawers so you can do a quick tidy and have somewhere to put things when you need the room. Whenever you get the urge to be bare and functional visit new show homes they are beautiful but have no life.

  10. Good evening, Trish! I've read a number of minimalist blogs and think it makes sense but.... I love all the sweet touches around my little cottage. It wouldn't be the same without them.

    Have a lovely evening!

  11. I'm definitely not a minimalist either and I think it's important to stay true to who we are. Our homes really can create a warm and inviting feel and reflect the love of Christ to those who enter.

  12. :-) LOL Enjoyed this post! I just finished taking down a few plaques on the walls of the kitchen. I got tired of the color more than anything. It doesn't look bare, just maybe not so cluttered. I think a home should look and feel "lived in". I don't like to walk into someone's home and feel like I shouldn't sit on anything or touch anything ~ like it's right out of Southern Living magazine! Those magazine houses are nice, but sure not lived in or warm. BUT, I don't like to feel like I'm walking into a "Flea Market" either. :-) And have to LOOK for a place to sit! There is a happy medium there that is "just us"! Who we are! I'm sure your home is warm and comfy, because you are warm and comfy ~ that's who you are.
    Blessings,
    Anne♥

  15. Hi Trish,
I often lie in bed planning what things I will take off my shelves so they will be less 'full'.....then I get up and find I can't decide what things to pack away because I like them all.....soo..nothing changes.
I guess my style of decorating is 'full on'...or maybe I should call it 'full up'
    I love your decorating style.
    Have a good week
    God Bless

  16. I don't like clutter but I think a home needs to be filled with things that make the owners feel cozy and content. I have visited some homes where there is hardly a space on the wall that has not been covered with something. I'm sure those things are things that the owner likes but there should be a happy medium, I think. It sounds like you have a lovely home.------ Shannon

  17. This is an interesting post, Trish. Well-loved china and knick-knacks always lend a friendly and warm feel to a home in my opinion. I'm glad the young man was comfortable enough to be truthful with you. These little "things" in our homes do indeed reflect our personalties. Wonderful post. Thanks for sharing.

    Blessings,

  20. Trish - I felt like this was ME talking in the first person here. I, too, decorate with myriad of this and thats in vintage flair with all sorts of displays here and there. I have always thought of my home as a canvas and home decor as the paint with which I create a visual story. People have always remarked that the home has a warmth to it - cozy - and that there is so much to look at and wonder about. Like a museum. I love that! Everything has a story that points to the goodness, glory, and providence of the Lord. It is a joy to change it all out for the seasons, too. And, now - with my daughter getting married and moving out - I will have a whole new room to decorate! I am sorry to see her leave (though thrilled for her -s he will be missed) but I am excited about a new decorating challenge. How creative can I be and how beautiful and useful can I make the new room . . .

    Joy!

  21. Trish, you don't know how much I needed to read this post. It's been a big help to me and I just posted about the changes in my thinking on my blog. I referenced this post (hope you don't mind) as you wrote almost exactly how I feel and said it all so well.

    Thanks my friend!
