What I've been up to...

Thought I'd show you a few of the things I've done in the backyard lately :-)

Been busy clearing more ground to extend some garden beds and build more slate retaining walls.

Those 4 grey plants in the front of the pic are Centaurina. They are growing along the front of our local Botanic Gardens and I'm hoping next year to have a short hedge of them - I love their beautiful blue thistle flowers!

How do you like this round raised rose bed that I made a week ago?
It's quite smallish.. but I think it fits nicely in the arc of the other two beds.

The pretty pink rose is called "Jane McGrath"..and is named after the late wife of one of our best cricketers.
Jane died from breast cancer, and a portion of the sale of these roses goes to help her Foundation fund their research for a cancer cure.

I put some white pebbles on the path to see if they look alright with the slate..not sure what I'll use to fill in the gaps yet.

Slowly but surely..the grass is disappearing and more garden beds are being "born".

A few days ago I dug out and started working on 2 new beds in front of the blue shed.
We went to the Botanic Gardens on Sunday and bought some young plants from their annual sale.
So I now have some azaleas and mint bushes that I hope will eventually fill out the new beds.

Although Autumn is certainly 'making itself known' and the leaves are quickly 'turning' on our deciduous trees, we are still having some warm days and our flowers are still blooming well throughout the garden.
Our tomatoes are continuing to crop heavily and we now have lots of self-sown baby tomato plants springing up over the yard.
Looks like a cold frame/glasshouse is in order!
It will be interesting to see how much longer we'll be giving our excess tomatoes away to the neighbours.
I think they can look forward to another month's worth by the look of things - what fun  :-)

  1. Oh Trish...everything looks so lovely :) Spring is slowly arriving here at the cottage. Some greenery, but very few flowers :( Now our country is mourning for the tragedy of the bomb attacks that happened just this past weekend. It is going to be a very bittersweet Spring.

  4. I like your little round rose garden and the rose in it is a pretty colour, I didn't know they had named a rose after Jane.
I surpose it's getting cold up there we had a few cold nights but the days are still nice and warm.

  10. Pretty gardens! And the pink roses....very nice!

Your tomatoes remind me of mine during our last fall. This spring a neighbor came up to me and told me to plant an extra plant for him, as he so enjoyed all I gave him last season.

You look so pretty hiding behind the turning leaves :)
