I love the earthy smell of fresh vine-ripened tomatoes
the smoothness of the skin
the weight of them in my hands
and the warmth of the sun's rays kindled in my palm.
I love the deep and vibrant colour of the flesh
the generous juices flowing through my fingers
the furry green of stem and stalk
and the pattern of the seeded slices.
A cheery globe of red to set the world aright
when pressed between the white of doughey bread
and sprinkled with the salt of liberality..
a simple pleasure to consume with joyful thanks.. flowing from a simple heart.

Tomatoes are a delight! Love your post and your blog.
ReplyDeleteI love farm fresh tomatoes too! I favour the Roma tomatoes and the small grape variety. They are delicious!
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing better than homegrown tomatoes, I like the Roma variety. So often the ones from the supermarket have no flavour.
ReplyDeleteHi, Trish! thanks for stopping over to my blog yesterday. I love the caramel apple cider more'n my luggage! Haha! Some people prefer straight cider, b/c the caramel takes some of the bite out of it, but I like it this way. I always love coming to your blog - such a peaceful moment in time to just sit and soak in God's blessings! My husband and I are not big tomato eaters unless they're incorporated in another dish in small pieces, but I am always amazed at the perfection and variety of God's creation!
ReplyDeleteThanks again for stopping by! Come back soon!!!

A girl after my own heart. I'm a tomato lover!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful imagery, Trish, as always.
Trish,
ReplyDeleteI'm not a very big fan of tomatoes, but after your description about them here being pressed every so gently between white doughey bread, it gave me a desire for some tomatoes. :)
I simply love your writing Trish. I like how your descriptions of detail on the simple things of life. I wish I had that gift, but alas, I do not. :)
Blessings to you,
-Lady Rose

ReplyDeleteI just wanted to say I loved this post. The beautiful photo and the beautiful words as well. Thank you!
I LOVE home-grown tomatoes. I tried my hand at it this year for the first time, with limited success. But the ones, I did get...oh, a little slice of heaven!
ReplyDeletemmmm, such a summer treat ;)
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite quotes is by Lewis Grizzard:
ReplyDelete"It's difficult to think anything but pleasant thoughts while eating a home grown tomato."
I, for one, couldn't agree more. I love my *maters* just about any way I can get them. I think they are one of the ultimate simple pleasures.
Why... nearly as good as chocolate. Grin.
Love tomatoes and that is one of my simple pleasures too.
ReplyDeleteHope your having a awesome day.
Hugs,
Cindy
I love a tomato sandwhich with mayo yummy !!! thanks for sharing ...
ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful word pictures you paint! Loved the imagery of the "furry green stem..." is just wonderful. I love them all in all the ways you can eat them! :)

This is a beautiful poem to accompany a beautiful photo!
ReplyDeleteI can just smell one now - there is nothing like fresh ones. So much better than those bought in a store.
ReplyDeleteHave a blessed weekend.
I love fresh tomatoes, too! They taste so much more delicious when they're eaten straight out of the yard and still warm from the sun!
ReplyDeleteHave you ever made a tomato pie? If a tomato ever had to give up its life, that is a noble way to go. :)
Trish, this was so beautifully written, I felt as though I was holding the tomato myself. Tomatoes are one on God's most delicious fruits, and I do enjoy them especially one that comes from my own garden. Thank you for sharing, and thank you for visiting me and for taking the time to leave me such a sweet comment.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Sue
I'm in total agreement! I'll take a vine-ripened, fresh-from-the-garden tomato any which way, but I especially love them with a little salt & pepper...or sandwiched between some bacon & lettuce. YUM!
ReplyDeleteI love tomatoes.too. I did not have a good growing season this year.I am already dreaming about what seeds to plant in my spring garden.
ReplyDeleteTomatoes are my Mom's favorite thing to eat on a sandwich! I've never really tasted one, guess I should!! I LOVE your blog and your post!
ReplyDeleteDear Ladies, thank you so much for all your kind comments! It's nice to meet so many tomatoe lovers out there :-)
