Simple Pleasures ~ picket fences

I have always wanted to have an old fashioned picket fence.
To me..there's something quintessentially 'cottage' about them.
They seem to announce to passers-by, "here lives a soul who lives life slowly, cooks for the joy of it, hugs everyone heartily, kneels in the garden and knits in the kitchen where the kettle's always boiling."
And because, in some ways, they remind me of my grandmother's house, they always say 'family' to me.
I can't imagine a cold, uncaring home-owner choosing such a warm trim for their surrounds.
No..surely only a gentle heart..a lover of peace and beauty and family, would tie up their home with pickets!
I recently found this one gracing a beautiful rambling garden and I just loved the pretty colour of it!
What a simple pleasure an old picket fence can be..

grace & joy..Trish

Here in the cottage, I have one surrounding my garden. It will be painted white come summer.

  4. You are so right - picket fences say "old-fashioned" and "gentlepeople live here" to me. Love that color blue. Great Simple Pleasure.

  5. I had a antique shop for many years in Seabrook, Texas . It was surrounded by a chippy paint picket fence. The shop was painted pink. It was wonderful and I loved that time in my life.

  9. Yes, a picket fence does seem to give that sense of slowing down, home things, a cottage garden. Love how the flowers echo the colour of the fence.

  17. I have always loved picket fences! If was to have a picket fence I would also want a wrap around covered porch too. *grin* I also love cast lacy iron fences too. With the colouring of my abode I would have to say the cast iron would go better.

    Blessings and ((HUGS))!

  18. There was a house across the street from where I went to college. It was yellow, with a white picket fence. When I saw it, it brought me such comfort and peace. I'm so with you!

  19. I love them too! In our first home, we put one around our garden area. We had someone look at it when we were selling and say, "The first thing I would do is tear down that little white fence." Besides being kind of rude, I thought it was so curious. I think a little picket fence is lovely.

I wish we had one here, in fact.

    I like your simple pleasure!

  24. I agree, Trish - a picket fence just says "home" and a laid-back, slow paced lifestyle. Reminds me of simpler times.

The photo of the fence and cottage garden is lovely.

    Blessings,
    Joan

  25. Hi Trish,
    I love picket fences too.
I agree they are welcoming and homey.
I particularly like the 'finished' look they give to a house.

I even find wonky old wooden fences have that
'come over here and I'll tell you a story' look to them.

If I had fence I'd like it to look like the one in your photo.

    God bless
    your sister,Barb from Australia

  26. I have always wanted to live in a cozy cottage with a picket fence. A dream. I dont live in a cottage but I try and make my home as cozy as possible. And in my suburb we aren't allowed to have front fences! Who knows why!?

  27. Beautiful picture. We have picket fence all around our yard. Right now it is stained but I would love to paint it this summer.

  29. Trish,

Yes, a picket fence is simple, but lovely. If we had more land space, I would not mind having one going around our property.

  31. We have a white picket fence surrounding our entire yard. I love it...it's one of the characteristics that drew me to this house. But I don't love that it needs to be painted every couple of years or so!

I love the lavender -- or is it Russian sage -- in the photo above...the perfect accompaniment to the white picket fence.

  32. This purple fence is beautiful! So traditional and yet very unique in its own way.
